GUY LIMONE, born in 1958 in Villefranche-sur-Saône, France. 

Trained in the art schools of Lyon, Paris and Aix en Provence (DNSEP 1985), Guy Limone has lived in Marseille, Montreuil and since 2017 in Angoulême. Between 1993 and 2017 Guy Limone was represented by the Emmanuel Perrotin Gallery and since 2019 he is represented by the Eric Dupont Gallery, Paris.

 

Colour is in the centre of Limone's œuvre. The artist assembles collections of colours that he creates from photographs taken in different cities and countries of the world. He gathers these fragments on fluorescent tubes (Colour of Mali, 1995; Venice Red, 2013; Chromatic Horizon, 2015... ), makes collages out of magazines, advertising brochures… that he conscientiously orders before making large installations (Tapisserie bleue, 1997; Bleu-jaune–rouge, 2002; Rose noir et blanc, 2013) and ‘paintings’ (series of Collections,1993-2005; series of Picture paintings,2012-2015...). 

His artistic work is an illusory attempt to understand the world through more or less scientific means. Between the sociology of detail and empirical aesthetic analysis, the artist plays with humour, with absurdity and derision and questions the desire to rationalize our environment.

Guy Limone transforms sociological statistics into rich-in-colour visual statements in the form of small plastic figurines that recreate our society in miniature and provoke philosophical contemplation (26% of French people think that God is indeed the creator of the world, 1988; It is estimated that every day 326 women and 1097 men are murdered, 2004; Up to 65% of French people felt, the day before the survey, emotions of joy, pleasure, calm, serenity, 2016...). 

 "Guy Limone's universe, writes Pascale Cassagnau, consists of translation, a system of symbolization and representation that concerns the image of the territory and the community, based on a model: miniaturization and synthesis in quantitative data create a gap and result from a transfer between the reality and its representation."*

It is precisely in the knot of reality and its transcription where the critical weight of Guy Limone's work is found.
